The Republic of Discord (ROD or RoD), commonly known as "the Republic" or as "Discordia," was a mock government based on Discord consisting of between three and five states, one federal district, and several incorporated territories at various points in its history. It was one of the largest mock governments on discord by member size (2,300), but suffered from a long period of decline both in member count and in activity over the last several years of its existence as a result of internal conflict, lack of competent and dedicated administration, a series of incompetent and weak governments, poor reputation among the community as a result of previous aggression, and emigration to other mock governments as a result of the aforementioned factors.

At its peak, the Republic of Discord was considered an incredibly influential mock government, first as the "mainline" or "hegemonic" mock government in its section of the community during 2019's Pax Discordia, and then once again as one of many servers in the multi-polar reality of 2020-2021 (also see New Discordia), alongside servers like the Soviet Union, the Authority, and raiding groups like the Fourth Brigade. The decline of the Republic of Discord coincided with, but was not caused by, the end of the Authority and the decline in relevance of raider groups as well as the Soviet Unions' retreat into isolation in a extended period of stagnation within the Mock Government Community.

The national capital of the Republic of Discord was the city of New Discordia, and its three core states were Doulant, Balion, and Avalon. Additionally, Calluris was a incorporated territory of the Republic. The nation ended in its Seventeenth Republic (iteration), with other notable iterations being the First, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Seventh, Twelfth, and Fifteenth Republics.

Several other extant mock governments have their origins in the Republic of Discord, including Krameria, Doulant (People's Republic of), Calluris, and a wide variety of smaller mock governments. In turn, the Republic of Discord traced many of its origins back to servers like WTP and the Amullian Empire.

The Republic of Discord, formed in 2018, was finally dissolved with Antares' Farewell Address, released on the 17th of January, 2024. Reasons cited for the dissolution included the loss of interest and activity, the effective dissipation of the active user base, and the consistent failure of ROD Administrators to revive the server despite their undermining of the democratic processes. The speech was generally well recieved by former ROD citizens and the community at large, although many in the community celebrated the downfall of the Republic. The final de jure owners of the Republic of Discord were Ultra and Romulus, who succeeded to the Ownership following the resignation of individuals such as Big Blake and SunGlisten. The final President of the Republic of Discord was WatermelonNop. He was the eighth President of the final Republic of Discord.

History

The Romulant Republics (ROD 1-2)

According to apocryphal evidence, the Republic of Discord came into existence following its formation by the statesman on (or before) January 21st, 2018, and stagnated until April of 2018, when what we know as the First Republic of Discord was established, undergoing a rapid expansion in members and subsequent introduction into the wider community of nations.

More recent evidence suggests that the First Republic of Discord was established on the 11th of July, 2018, at 2:14 AM - with the first known constitution of the Republic having been published even later, on the 10th of August, 2018, at 12:48 PM. It is important to note that the Republic of Discord could have conceivably been established prior to this date, if Romulus had created a new server post-First Republic. From this point, the Republic of Discord grew in membership and in activity, with many well-known early Discordian citizens joining at this time. These citizens included L0GAN, Romulus' many alts, Botonian, and Khronos.

The First Republic of Discord co-existed with contemporary mock governments such as the Amullian Empire, Trinity's Empire, and East Amullia.

Romulus' heavy-handed administration of the server and administrative control of the government led directly to various movements for reform and liberalization in the nominally democratic Republic. Spearheading these movements were individuals such as Botonian (who were later revealed to have been aligned with Trinity), who commonly formed rebel nations known as the "Democratic Empire of Discord." Ultimately, most of these rebellions were stifled by Romulus and his security forces, but not before leading to increased tensions with Trinity's Empire.

With the support of Trinity Sympathizers such as Botonian, the First Sith-ROD conflicts lead to a rivalry which would only deepen in the early Republic. The First-ROD Trinity conflict took place, and lead to the end of the First Republic in the Republic's First Nuke.

What followed the First Republic was the Inter-Republic Period, a period of time without a strong central ROD-style government, with the State of Discordia (a ownership dictatorship) supplanting the functions of the ROD until the formation of the Second Republic. Apocryphally, several nukes were said to have happened during this time. This is a dark period of ROD history, with little historical evidence of events occurring during the period. During this period, problems in Amullia exacerbated and lead to the slow downfall of the mock-government power, while Trinity's Empire isolated themselves further from Micronational activities. It is believed that modern Osmania may have risen during this time, as well as WTP's Downfall.

Following this period of internal strife and general disorganization in the community, the Second Republic formed as the Amullian Empire continued to wane. Figures such as L0GAN rose to higher prominence during this time, as Trinity's triumph in the Sith-ROD conflicts became apparent with his increasing influence over the Discordian state. With rising discontent from both Trinity's foreign influence and with the lack of political reform, a rebellion began to form around L0GAN, Khronos, and other anti-Romulus leaders. The rebellion was further bolstered with a mass immigration of former Amullians, with emigration from Amullia coming as a result of failed political reforms there. Ultimately, following a short conflict, the rebellion triumphed against Romulus and formed the Third Republic of Discord.

It is important to note that much of the First and Second Republic of Discords' history is apocryphal at best and fabricated at worst. More reliable accounts of the Republics' history do not emerge until the formation of the Library of Congress (and other historical archives) in the Third Republic.

The Third Republic (ROD 3)

Romulus' deposition allowed further democratic reforms to come to ROD, satisfying many former Amullian Members and Discordian citizens who came over to the new Republic. The Third Republic is often considered a "rebirth" for the Republic of Discord, with the the population of new immigrants far dwarfing that of the original community. A "new guard" soon began to form, taking over the institutions and offices of the Republic.

The tradition of the President-Owner was done away with in the Third Republic, and a firm tradition that no owner shall ever sit as head of state was created and respected until Porsche's Ownership. The reasoning of this was likely to separate the administration from the government, likely to discourage public anger from being focused at the administration, thus preserving stability.

The Third Republic was one of internal strife and reform, with several reforms turning ROD into a more democratic Republic. L0GAN was generally respected as a democratic and unbiased owner, although some authoritarian aspects of Romulus' rule continued into L0GAN's administration of the server, including the preservation of the Administrative veto on bills and constitutional amendments. During this time, the three Districts were given the names of Doulant (D1), Balion (D3), and Avalon (D2), with every republic afterwards retaining these names with few execptions.

The Third Republic also saw the rise of legislative and judicial significance and the subsequent definition and limitation of executive Powers. The power of the executive branch was further limited by the lack of the Administration's backing, with the offices of President and Owner now separated in a meaningful way.

The early Third Republic was dominated by a three party system, with the UDP, Federalists, and right-wing-radicals dominating ROD Politics. The right-wing-radicals dominated early Republican politics, but the nature of their platform and hateful rhetoric lead to popular (and Administrative) outrage against them. Subsequently, the administration of the Republic of Discord (with the broad support of the people) preformed a coup against the radical government, removing them from power and the server in an event known as Khronos' Great Purge. The First President of the Third Republic, Arminius, was deposed, leading to the election of the Second President, Jiki Scott (UDP).

His administration, too, was tumultuous, with him later being revealed as a Trinity agent and subsequently removed in a coup by the fledgling National Guard and Administration. Jiki Scott's removal lead the Republic into another conflict with Trinity, with the National Guard enlarged to counter Trinity. Vice President BigDealRahil was later inaugurated as the Third President following Jiki Scott's flight from the Capital. This series of administrative and National Guard coups further deepened the ties between the Administration and the Republic's security establishment, and further weakened the power of the Presidency.

The Third Republic ended with Trinity nuking the server (via his administrative agent, Cosmical) and getting engaged in further conflict with Amullia, still the dominant power in the regional micronational community, leading to a large-scale war in which the ROD slowly withdrew.

Ultimately, the tumultuous period known as the Third Republic lead to the first foundations of the lasting Fourth Republic.

The Fourth Republic (ROD 4)

The fall of the Third Republic lead to the formation of the Fourth Republic, where even further democratic reforms took place. Trinity's Empire fell back into isolation following the Amullian Wars, paving the road for ROD to become a "great power" in the community. It is during this time when Osmania began falling into chaos and civil war, with the stable regimes which preceded the Fourth Republic beginning to fall apart.

WhiteHoleGaming's (UDEP) early election as President of the Republic of Discord laid the groundwork for significant democratic reforms within the Republic of Discord. During this period, the UDEP (UDP) solidified itself as the ROD's governing party, winning a number of congressional, state, and national elections. It was during this time that Balion was solidified as a liberal stronghold. However, the one-party state of affairs lead to the rise of the Discordia First Party (DFP), a big tent party which lead to mass defections from the UDEP and it's eventual downfall.

The election of President Bush (now known as jqof) solidified a new democratic status quo in the Republic of Discord. However, the strengthening democratic institutions of the Republic of Discord were incompatible with the power held by the National Guard in the Third Republic of Discord. Increasing tensions between the National Guard and elements within the Supreme Court ultimately lead to the attempted disbandment of the National Guard and the dismissal of it's leader, Mcl5. Upon receipt of these orders, the National Guard mutinied against the government and ordered the arrest of a number of "anti-guard" individuals. These incidents (among others) threatened to tear the DFP and the Bush Presidency apart, forcing him to resign.

Vice President Tojo took his place. President Tojo and Congress now faced an increasingly powerful National Guard and Military Apparatus, with the security forces of the Republic no longer answering to lawful authorities. Tojo's Presidency saw further delegation of powers to the National Guard, with Mcl5 being appointed as the "Chief of Staff," with Presidential authority in all but name.

The crisis came to a head in late December, with the perceived corruption of the courts engaging a number of Republic citizens and leading to riots in the capital. The National Guard, instead of suppressing the riots, arrested all Supreme Court Justices, with any opponents of the Guard's new regime also arrested. The National Guard proceeded to join the riots in the Capital against the Supreme Court, and called for the removal of many competent Justices, leading to Chief Justice Windu fleeing the Republic.

The December Riots came to a head with the so-called "National Guard Mutiny," where martial law was declared and the NG was empowered to "stop" the riots. Eventually, with the support of the Administration, and with insistence from the courts, Mcl5 was exiled from the Republic. National Guard members were replaced by pro-Republic Loyalists within the Guard and also exiled or arrested. The swift dissolution of the National Guard following this lead to a second round of riots carried out by Executive Commander Delta, and the formation of the Pro-NG Colenian Party, both of which were swiftly suppressed. The NotMyCongress movement was formed underground by many former NG members, exiled from the Republic, to influence ROD's Politics in the future, leading up to the Suda-Romulus election.

The Suda-Romulus election turned out to be the second most decisive (and most riotous) election to date, with the situation progressing to a point where many former National Guard members were unconstitutionally given a full pardon to "out-riot" the rioters by the Administration. Mcl5 and the National Guard's return lead to the election of none other than Romulus as President, greatly alienating many so-called "Constitutionalists" within the Republic. With the rapid downfall of the UDEP, defections were common to the new Colenian Party, and a merger with the NUP formed the Colenian Union Party (CUP), which would begin to dominate ROD politics from then onwards, backing Romulus and changing ROD into what was effectively a executive dictatorship.

In response, anti-NG sympathizers, anti-colenians, and other individuals all entered into a political alliance known as the Constitution Party to defend against the new Colenian Party, which was filled with newcomers from the server Colenia and ex-members of the National Guard. Romulus was eventually removed from office for corruption, but the influence of the CUP would only grow. With the defection of Florez to the CUP and the first congressional elections of 2019 granting yet more political capital to the CUP, the party quickly became a dominant force within Discordian politics.

The Congressional Elections of January saw the election of the first CUP Congressmen, and then a CUP Majority after that. Balion was quickly transformed by riots and shifting demographics, turning it from a solid UDEP stronghold to the headquarters of the CUP. Doulant and Balion also both became strong CUP states, with Avalon being the only state leaning constitutionalist. The populist actions of the CUP attracted many to its banners, leading to it becoming the single largest party in ROD by far.

Soon after, a supermajority in Congress by the CUP, and then a fully controlled Congress by the CUP lead to a one party Republic.

Legacy

The Republic was known for its rich historical tradition, being one of the first mock governments to establish institutions for the documentation and preservation of history. The Mock Governments Wiki in its current form can trace its roots back to historical institutions formed within the Republic of Discord.
